Dr Apurba Kumar Sarma, is a familiar name in the field of Cardiovascular Surgery in India as well as in Bangladesh. He worked in the Department of Cardiac Surgery at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital at Delhi in the year 1995-96. He completed the super-specialty training in Cardio Vascular Surgery from the Famous Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute of Medical Sciences and Technology, Kerala, India an institute of national importance and worked till September, 2004. He was invited to Bangladesh for setting up a cardiac surgery setup in a private sector and to train manpower in the field of Cardio-vascular Sciences. He came to Bangladesh September, 2004 with a core group of members for accomplishing the responsibility handed over to him and styed till 2017.
Dr. Sarma has performed 5000 Open Heart Surgeries successfully . He does all types of open heart operations with excellent results and the types of operations constitutes Coronary artery bypass surgery including Redo CABG, Coronary Artery Reconstruction surgery, all types of valve replacements and repairs, Congenital heart surgeries Major Vascular Surgeries. In Bangladesh he is the first surgeon to perform the following surgeries successfully:
Aortic root replacement operation (Bentall debono procedure) for Annuloaortic ectasia due to Marfan’s syndrome in January 2005.
Post myocardial infarction VSD repair with CABG and LV aneurysm repair in March 2005.
Combined Cerebral (Right carotid endarterectomy),Myocardial (CABG) and both lower limb (Bilateral Femoro-popliteal bypass graft) revascularization.
Another feather was added to his cap while he became the first surgeon to start open heart surgery programme at Gauhati Medical College, Guwahati, Assam, India in February 2006. In the field of Academics he has contributed to the world medical literature, He has many National and International scientific papers. His papers were published in many reputed international Journals. Dr Sarma is also dynamic and energetic leader having organizational capabilities. He was active steering committee member of National Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery Conference-2005, Cochin, India. He is also life member of Indian Association of Cardiovascular-Thoracic Surgeon and Indian Medical Association.
In the year 2017 he has returned to his native city Guwahati, capital of Assam, India to develop international standard cardiac services in the North East region of India and started working in Namcare Heart Institute and Research Center.
